Formation

The simple present (aorist) expresses habitual actions, general truths, and future intentions. It's formed differently for positive and negative:

Positive: verb stem + -r/-ır/-ir/-ur/-ür + personal ending

Negative: verb stem + -mez/-maz + personal ending

Vowel harmony determines which variant to use.

Gel-ir-im
I come (usually)

gel + ir + im

Yap-ar-ım
I do/make (usually)

yap + ar + ım

İç-er-im
I drink (usually)

iç + er + im

Choosing the Right Suffix

For most verbs ending in consonant:

- Single syllable verbs: -ar/-er

- Multi-syllable verbs: -ır/-ir/-ur/-ür

For verbs ending in vowel: use -r (e.g., oku-r, anla-r)

For verbs ending in l: typically take -(I)r (e.g., gel-ir, bil-ir, al-ır)

For verbs ending in r: typically take -ar/-er (e.g., sor-ar, gezer, koşar)

Common irregular verbs: demek → der, yemek → yer

Note: These are common patterns, but exceptions exist (e.g., delmek → deler, not delir). Learn common verbs individually.

Bil-ir-im
I know

bil (one syllable with l) + ir

Oku-r-um
I read (habitually)

oku (ends in vowel) + r

Al-ır-ım
I take (usually)

al (one syllable with l) + ır
