Offering and Refusing Food/Gifts (İkram Etmek ve Reddetmek)
Turkish hospitality is legendary. Hosts will insist multiple times when offering food or drinks. Guests often refuse politely 2-3 times before accepting (this is called 'ikram' culture). This back-and-forth is a ritual of politeness, not genuine refusal.
Usage contextsocial
Do
- Refuse politely 1-2 times before accepting
- Use phrases like 'Sağ olun, teşekkürler' (Thank you, I'm okay)
- Eventually accept the offer - complete refusal can offend
- Compliment the food/gift sincerely
- Reciprocate hospitality when possible
- Show genuine appreciation
Don't
- Don't accept immediately on first offer (seems too eager)
- Don't refuse more than 3 times (becomes insulting)
- Don't refuse without a reason if host insists strongly
- Don't leave food on your plate if you took it (wasteful)
- Don't criticize food or gifts
