Turkish Tea Culture (Çay Kültürü)
Tea (çay) is the centerpiece of Turkish hospitality and social life. Turkish tea is strong black tea served in small tulip-shaped glasses (ince belli bardak). It is offered to guests immediately upon arrival and consumed throughout the day. Refusing tea may be seen as refusing hospitality in some contexts.
Usage contextdining
Do
- Accept the first offer of tea - it shows respect
- Hold the glass by the rim or handle to avoid burning fingers
- Add sugar to taste (1-2 cubes is common)
- Take small sips - tea is served very hot
- If offered refills, accept at least once
- Say 'Afiyet olsun' (enjoy) when drinking together
Don't
- Don't refuse tea outright - at least take a sip
- Don't add milk (Turkish tea is never served with milk)
- Don't gulp it down quickly - tea time is social time
- Don't leave immediately after drinking - stay for conversation
- Don't expect coffee unless you specifically ask (tea is default)
